Project Broken Axle: The Story of a July Suprise.
Log Entry 129: I felt like the tide was turning in my quest to have a good July, and I made it less than a few hours before I heard the news.
I took my Scout II out to tweak my EFI a few days ago. I noticed a rattle in the back end of the truck the other day. I talked to my mechanic, who told me it would be fine because he thought it was the DRUM Brakes. I thought, why not? I showed up and took my Scout for a spin. I drove around for 10 minutes, and the rattle became a grind. It didn’t sound good. I noticed I didn’t have power to the wheels. I was stuck, and thank God I was on a slight hill. I tried getting it going but was stuck again. A dad and his son pulled up behind me and jumped to help, and we got across the street and out of the way for the night. I would tow it in the morning.
As you can see above, I got a new axle. It is beautiful, brand new, and has a 10-year warranty! I went with the 3.73 gear ratio with a limited-slip differential(true track locker) and will be here in 60-70 days. You heard me. I didn’t think about this because parts have been pretty easy. Finding a part like an axle or tranny. If you are budgeting time, make sure things like this are built into your prep. 2 months if you are building a show car to make a show date. That can hurt!
